Dual Immersion Program 90:10 Model

We offer a Dual Language Immersion (DLI) program where students learn in two languages—English and Spanish. In this program, students who speak English, Spanish, or both are placed together in the same classroom. They learn regular school subjects (like math, science, and reading) in both languages, but not the same lessons in both languages. Instead, each subject is taught in just one language. Our school follows the 90:10 model, which means that when students start in transitional kindergarten (TK) or kindergarten, 90% of the school day is taught in Spanish, and 10% is in English. As students move up through the grades, the amount of English increases gradually. By 4th grade, students spend half their day in English and half in Spanish. Here’s how it works in the early grades:

  • In TK through 2nd grade, students have one teacher for Spanish and a different teacher for English. They spend most of their day in Spanish and go to the English teacher for a small part of the day.

  • In 3rd grade and up, students stay in one classroom all day with a bilingual teacher. They learn some subjects in English and others in Spanish, depending on the subject.

Grade English Spanish
TK 90% 10%
K 90% 10%
1 80% 20%
2 70% 30%
3 60% 40%
4, 5, 6 50% 50%

Enrichment

We are thrilled to share some of the wonderful enrichment programs that make our school a vibrant and engaging place for your child to learn and grow. At Hapgood, we believe in offering a well-rounded educational experience that nurtures both the mind and body. Here are some of the exciting opportunities your child will enjoy:

  1. Weekly Campus Library Visits
Our students love exploring new books and discovering the joys of reading! Every week, we offer campus library visits, where students have the chance to check out books, listen to captivating stories, and develop a lifelong love for reading. We are proud to expand our reading options to include more Spanish books, as we try to maintain an inclusive environment.  Our library visits also encourage literacy skills and spark creativity in young minds.

  2. Gardening
Gardening is an amazing way for students to connect with nature and learn about responsibility, growth, and sustainability. Students participate in hands-on gardening activities, where they plant, nurture, and harvest their very own crops. Gardening also helps develop teamwork, patience, and a deeper understanding of the environment.

  3. Physical Education
Our Physical Education (PE) program promotes fitness, teamwork, and healthy habits. Through a variety of fun and engaging activities, students improve their motor skills, coordination, and overall physical health. Whether it’s team sports, outdoor games, or individual fitness challenges, PE is an exciting way for students to stay active and build a positive attitude toward physical wellness.

  4. Music
In our music program, students explore rhythm, melody, and sound through singing, playing instruments, and musical games. Whether they’re tapping to the beat, creating their own songs, or learning to play a simple instrument, music helps develop critical thinking skills, creativity, and teamwork. It’s an enriching experience that supports both cognitive and emotional growth.
